Membership Details

Under the Memorandum and Articles of Association, personal membership is open to persons employed in the profession of librarianship (including library assistants) while personal membership is open to those with an interest in the work, progress and welfare of libraries but who are not employed in the profession. Libraries and other corporate bodies may join as Institutional Members.

All LAI Personal Members are issued with a LAI card which entitles them to:

  • The Countdown VHI Health Scheme and
  • Avail of the LAI Car, Travel and Motor Insurance Schemes (Denotes MS Word document 38kb)
  • O'Mahony's Bookshops, Limerick, Ennis and Tralee (12.5% Discount) - Conditions Apply - 12.5% discount on general books strictly on production of the LAI card. Certain categories such as schoolbooks , academic books and low-discount special orders are excluded.
  • Vibes and Scribes bookshop, Cork - 10% discount with LAI card
  • The Book Nest, Sligo - 15% discount with LAI card
  • Michael Doyle Bookshop, Wicklow - 10% discount with the LAI/Countdown Card

You may print down a membership application form (which includes membership rates etc.) from this Web site. You can also contact the Association's Membership Secretary by writing to the Library Association of Ireland, 53 Upper Mount Street, Dublin 2, Ireland or e-mailing Membership Secretary.

Membership applications are reviewed at meetings of the Executive Board, after which new members receive confirmation of their membership and a welcome pack.

Membership applications will be reviewed when the Executive Board meets on:
19th October 2006;
30th November 2006;
18th January 2007;
15th February 2007.

Membership rates are set by the Annual General Meeting and only members in good standing are entitled to vote, act as Committee members, and receive An Leabharlann. Membership renewal notices are sent out every January and members who have not renewed within a specified times are deemed to be lapsed. A listing of members is published before the AGM each year.

HONORARY MEMBERSHIPS

The Executive Board has the power to award Honorary Life Membership to members whose contribution to the Association and the Profession is considered to be outstanding. Honorary Fellowship of the Association may also be awarded.
