16/19 May - The third Celtic Connections conference takes place in Cardiff from 16th-19th May 2006. The conference website is now live at www.celticconnections.info. The conference is organised by the LAI and CILIP Scotland; CILIP Wales, and CILIP in Ireland.

27 April - Promoting professional practices: continuing skills development for information professionals.
A seminar organised by the Academic & Special Libraries Section of the Library Association of Ireland. The seminar will provide an opportunity for information professionals from all sectors to consider the significance of skills development in the professional environment in which we work today. Speakers will look at perspectives in acquiring and developing relevant skills, and the opportunities created within organisations for information professionals.
Venue: Merrion Room, RDS, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4

Annual Joint Conference 2005

This year's annual joint conference takes place from 19th - 22nd April at the City Hotel, Derry.

The progamme has something of interest to all sectors and among the confirmed speakers are Stuart Hamiltion from Copenhagen, who'll speak about the War on Terror and Libraries, and Diantha Schull from the USA, on Libraries of the Future. There's a range of parallel sessions on Members' Day, 21st April, and a chance to catch up on important developments in cataloguing in Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR).

family portraitTaking stock: the inaugural seminar of the Genealogy and Local Studies Group will take place in the National Library of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin 2, on 24th February, beginning at 2.00pm. Among the speakers will be: Gobnait O'Riordan, President, Library Association of Ireland Genealogist and author John Grenham: 'Irish Genealogy: where next?' Historian Dr. William Nolan: 'Local Studies in Ireland - Inventory and Prospect'.

We are grateful to the National Library of Ireland that this inaugural event can be made available free of charge.

Annual Joint Conference 2004

The annual joint conference of the LAI and CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) Northern Ireland takes place in Wicklow from 20th-23rd April. The venue for the conference is the Marriott Druid's Glen Hotel and Country Club, Newtownmountkennedy, County Wicklow.

The theme of the conference is Libraries beyond the Digital, and the proceedings kick-off at 17.00 on Tuesday 20th April. LAI members’ day is on Thursday 22nd and transport will be laid on from Bray DART station. The conference banquet takes place that evening, preceded by an address from the Minister for the Environment, Heritage, and Local Government, Martin Cullen, TD.

Annual Joint Conference, 29th April - 2nd May 2003
The annual joint conference of the Library Association of Ireland and Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (Northern Ireland) takes place in the Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill, from 29th April to 2nd May. Among the key speakers is Kay Raseroka, President-elect of IFLA. Ms Raseroka is librarian at the University of Botswana and the conference organisers are delighted that she has accepted the invitation to address the conference. This year's conference also includes Members' Day on Thursday 1st May, featuring a total of 12 presentations in three parallel streams.

This Conference is Ireland's largest and most comprehensive library conference and exhibition. Drawing over 300 librarians, educators, public representatives, writers, publishers and special guests, the conference includes three days of lectures, meetings, discussion groups and seminars on topics affecting libraries and librarians. These events are designed to improve the practice of librarianship and take it to new professional levels each year.

The Galway Bay Hotel is well situated on the promenade at Salthill, and is right on the sea front, with excellent views of the Aran Islands and the Burren. The city is within easy taxi distance, or is an enjoyable walk. Conference registration will begin at 3.00pm on Tuesday April 29th with the official opening at 5.00pm. On Thursday night there is a Conference Banquet, and associated entertainment.

The Conference Registration Fee (Tuesday to Thursday, including Lunch, tea/ coffees, and conference banquet) is €300. The hotel costs are €77 for single room/ bed and breakfast.
